The Violet Hour (Pastel)

Inspired by a winter evening in Aberdour, Scotland, this pastel explores the fleeting moments after sunset when the landscape is transformed by shades of violet, indigo and rose.

Working from my own photograph, I was drawn not to the detail of the shoreline, but to the atmosphere of the scene—the silhouetted trees, the quiet water and the remarkable purples that appear for only a few precious minutes before night falls.

Created in professional soft pastel on archival Pastelmat, layers of richly pigmented pastel create soft transitions of light and colour while preserving the textures of bark, fallen leaves and woodland shadows.
