The Sleeping Warrior, Isle of Arran
Inspired by the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
Viewed from the Ayrshire coast across the Firth of Clyde, the distinctive outline of the Isle of Arran is affectionately known as The Sleeping Giant. From this viewpoint, the mountain ridge resembles the profile of a figure lying peacefully on its back, a name that has become woven into local folklore and generations of shared memories.
This artwork captures that familiar silhouette reflected in still waters, where the fading Scottish light softens the landscape into rich shades of blue. Rather than reproducing every detail, I sought to distil the scene to its essence—creating a quiet, contemplative piece that celebrates the tranquillity and timeless beauty of Scotland's west coast.
Hand-felted using carefully layered merino wool fibres, the artwork's subtle textures respond beautifully to changing light, bringing depth and movement to the landscape throughout the day.
