Through the Dunes

Hidden beyond the shelter of the dunes lies a stretch of coastline that has remained woven into my memory since childhood. This was the beach of my hometown Irvine, Ayrshire, where I spent many a summer day running barefoot through the sand, paddling in the sea with my brother and returning home sunburnt and tired as the light faded over the horizon.

Years later, I still find myself drawn back to this place. While the landscape has changed very little, the memories have softened with time. Rather than painting a specific moment, I wanted to capture the feeling of arriving at the shoreline after winding through the dunes—the first glimpse of the sea, the warmth of the evening light and the quiet anticipation of what lies beyond.

Created in professional soft pastel on archival Pastelmat, layers of richly pigmented pastel create soft transitions of light and colour while preserving the textures.
